The Real Property Law Section is pleased to announce that the 2012 Winter Conference will be held at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando. The Portofino is modeled after the famous fishing village of Portofino, on the Italian Riviera, and offers the utmost in charm, luxury and sophistication—first-class conference, spa, dining, and resort facilities—while simultaneously creating a family-friendly atmosphere, with themed beach pools, character dining, kids’ poolside activities, dive-in movies, and supervised camps. Also, as one of Universal’s 3 onsite hotels, the Portofino offers exclusive guest privileges in the 2 Universal parks and Universal CityWalk (Universal’s hub of dining, shopping, and live entertainment), all a short walk or complimentary water taxi ride away.

This year’s program embraces a redevelopment and reconstruction theme, focusing on the efforts of landowners, municipalities, and the construction industry to recast their plans in the wake of the Great Recession. Specifically, we will explore the challenges facing municipalities, landowners, and developers, as they attempt to revise master plans, and redevelop or re-zone properties to be marketable, with perspectives from both Michigan and Florida practitioners. On the construction front, a panel representing owners and contractors will share insights on the hottest construction litigation issues, pitfalls in the construction lien laws, and best practices for drafters of construction contracts. The final component of our program will educate Michigan practitioners on the most significant issues facing snowbirds and retirees purchasing Florida property, including various tax issues and the basics of Florida real estate acquisition and disposition.
