All the Ways A Lawyer Helps

Expungement Clinic Helps Detroiters

Each year, the Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., hosts its annual Expungement Clinic. Over the past several years, thousands of Detroit residents have attended the Expungement Clinics and have received help completing the forms to request expungements of eligible misdemeanor and felony convictions. At the Expungement Clinics, participants have also received job training, financial literacy information, and assistance obtaining criminal background checks.

The Expungement Clinics have proven to be an excellent opportunity for attorneys to help their community and provide pro bono legal assistance to many low-income citizens of Detroit. The overwhelming success of Delta Sigma Theta’s Expungement Clinic has been made possible by the work of many dedicated volunteer attorneys.

On Saturday, February 24, 2018, Delta Sigma Theta, in partnership with Lakeshore Legal Aid, is hosting another Expungement Clinic. Attorneys are encouraged to volunteer and help make this year's event the most successful yet. Attorney training will be provided the day of the clinic, so previous expungement experience is not necessary. Pro bono attorneys will learn the basics of expungement law and how to fill out the one page “Application to Set Aside Conviction” form.

Pro bono attorneys will meet one-on-one with clients. Experienced attorneys will be available at the clinic to answer questions that arise during client meetings. Pro bono attorneys are not responsible for the expungement court hearing or any other representation beyond the day of the event. Malpractice insurance will be provided by Lakeshore Legal Aid to cover pro bono expungement work completed at the clinic.
