Michigan Supreme Court sets attorney license fees at $415

The Michigan Supreme Court today issued Administrative Order 2022-3, supporting a request from the Representative Assembly to increase funding to the State Bar of Michigan for the first time in 18 years. The order also increases funding to the Attorney Discipline System.

Under the Order, Michigan attorneys license fees will be $415 starting in the next renewal cycle, which begins in September. The Supreme Court issued the order after a public hearing May 18. Thirteen members spoke in favor of the Representative Assembly-recommended increase; none spoke in opposition during the public hearing.

The increased funding for the State Bar of Michigan is less than the rate of inflation since current funding levels were set in 2004. The $415 license fee is divided among the State Bar of Michigan ($260), Attorney Discipline System ($140), and Client Protection Fund ($15).

The State Bar of Michigan operates as the licensing and regulatory agency for Michigan attorneys. Services provided by the State Bar of Michigan include helping to develop and implement access to justice initiatives, providing legal education opportunities, coordinating pro bono efforts, and responding to the changing needs of Michigan’s legal community and residents.
