Michigan Indigent Defense Commission Legislation Signed
Last week, Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation to ensure that the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission will be able to continue its work to improve indigent criminal defense systems in Michigan. The legislation was in response to concerns raised by the Michigan Supreme Court last June when the Court conditionally accepted the first set of standards for indigent defense systems. The Commission, previously housed in the judicial branch, will now be housed within the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. House Bills 5842-5846 were supported by the State Bar of Michigan, and together with Senate Bill 1109, the measures are now Public Acts 439-444 of 2016.
