An Update from the State Bar of Michigan About COVID-19

We are writing to let you know how the State Bar of Michigan is responding to the possibility of COVID-19 outbreak affecting our building in Lansing.

What preventive measures is the SBM taking?

The State Bar of Michigan has instituted extraordinary cleaning and disinfecting measures. There are hand sanitizer stations, handwashing reminders, and disinfectant wipes strategically placed throughout the building. We are also requiring all guests to register and provide contact information so we can quickly communicate with everyone who has visited the building if the need arises.

Our measures will not be effective without your help. If you are in charge of a meeting in our building, please advise everyone scheduled to attend your meeting to stay home if they are not feeling well. Please discourage handshaking and encourage attendees to use the wipes and sanitizers available in the building.

Under what circumstances will the State Bar building be closed to the public?

  • Government buildings are closed in Lansing
  • The Michigan Supreme Court advises we close our building
  • An SBM employee or visitor tests positive for COVID-19
  • An SBM employee or visitor is advised by a physician or a public health official to self-quarantine due to exposure

How will I know about a closure?

Our website will provide notice of any closure. If you have scheduled a meeting in the building, we will email you promptly. If your group has not already given SBM an email address, please do so now by emailing ddobias@michbar.org.

How should I let the SBM know about cancelling my reservation of a SBM building room?

If you would like to cancel a meeting or event you had planned in our building, please contact our facilities department at (517) 346-6314. Lawyers, sections, and committees are encouraged to offer dial-in numbers or a video conferencing option such as Zoom for people who would prefer to attend meetings remotely.

Notification of SBM if a Building Attendee Has Tested Positive or Been Requested to Self-Quarantine Due to Exposure

If you have held a meeting in the State Bar building within the last 21 days and are aware that a participant has tested positive or been advised to self-quarantine, please notify us immediately.

We will do our best to quickly notify all registered State Bar building attendees of possible exposure.
