Legislative Action Last Week:
Summary of legislative action on all bills that the State Bar or sections of the State Bar have taken positions.

HB 5512 (Michigan Medical Marihuana Act, Drug Treatment Courts) passed the Senate on June 30th with a vote of 30 to 8. It now goes to the governor for her signature.
SBM Position on HB 5512: Support.

HB 5749 (Revised Judicature Act of 1961, Compensation for District Court Judges) passed the Senate on June 30th with a vote of 37 to 1. It now goes to the governor for her signature.
SBM Position on HB 5749: Support.

HB 5783 (Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2022-2023) passed the Senate 37 to 0. It now goes to the governor for her signature.
SBM Position: Support the Executive Budget for the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission for the 2022-2023 Fiscal Year. Executive Budget for the Department of the Judiciary for the 2022-2023 Fiscal Year.

HB 5975 (Probate Code of 1939, Trauma-Informed Training for Lawyer-Guardian Ad Litem) was reported favorably without amendment out of Senate Health & Human Policy. It now goes to the floor of the Senate.

July 22 Board of Commissioners Public Policy Agenda
The SBM Board of Commissioners will be considering several public policy items at its June 22 meeting. The public policy agenda can be reviewed online. Members of the State Bar are invited to submit comments to the Board of Commissioners on any of the items on the agenda. All comments received before the meeting will be shared with the Board.

Applications are now open to volunteer for a State Bar of Michigan committee during the 2022-2023 bar year.

Four newly elected attorneys will join the Board of Commissioners and three incumbents also won re-election in the 2022 State Bar of Michigan elections.

The State Bar of Michigan is offering two virtual support groups starting this month.
