Core & Enhanced Services to Sections

The State Bar of Michigan has, as part of its core mission, the goal to improve and expand its services to State Bar sections. The State Bar shall provide basic financial and administrative services to support sections and shall price Enhanced Services at cost or for a reasonable fee. Core Services are defined as services that are required to provide sections administrative support and continuity.

Core Services at No Charge*

Financial Administration

  • Accounting for all section revenues and expenses
  • Prepare and mail annual section dues statements
  • Process section dues payments, including credit card payments
  • Answer member dues questions
  • Issue monthly financial reports
  • Account reconciliation
  • Process all bills and payables
  • Process accounts receivable and past due letters
  • Provide annual audit of section funds by external CPA


  • Provide staff liaison assistance to sections
  • Maintain section council records and bylaws
  • Maintain section member database
  • Provide basic website and maintenance as follows:
    • Home page
    • Links to section newsletters/events
    • Listing of special reports

Enhanced Services at No Charge* (as requested by the Section)


  • Provide these basic meeting services:
    • Schedule and arrange meeting rooms at SBM for section use
    • Coordinate food/refreshment orders for meetings
    • Distribute meeting notices/agendas (exclusive of the cost of mailing/printing)
    • Provide free parking in State Bar lot, as available
  • Press releases/publicity for section activities/events
  • Annual Meeting planning support for arranging a meeting room for a section's annual meeting

*Investment Income Attributable to Section Funds

The State Bar of Michigan will segregate funds it currently holds on behalf of the sections. The State Bar will retain the interest income (or absorb any loss) on these funds in exchange for providing the basic services set forth above.

Additional Services for a Reasonable Fee

Additional services are priced either at cost or for a reasonable fee, which is determined by the job or by the Bar's cost for the service provided and can vary depending on what is requested and in what quantity. Prices and services can also vary based on change in market rates. The cost charged to the Sections for these services covers the Bar's cost of providing the service requested, either in actual cost or the cost of providing staff to perform the service.
