Special Election to fill partial term on Judicial Tenure Commission

Special Election to fill partial term on Judicial Tenure Commission

Due to the resignation of a State Bar of Michigan-elected member of the Judicial Tenure Commission, the State Bar of Michigan will conduct a special election in July to fill the remainder of the term. (Please note this special election is in addition to the 2025 regular election for which voting begins later this month.)

The statewide special election will fill a partial term for a non-judicial seat on the JTC with a term ending December 31, 2026. Candidates must submit nominating petitions by emailing them to csharlow@michbar.org no later than June 16, 2025. Nominating petitions are available here.

Candidates must collect 50 valid signatures from active Michigan attorneys on their nominating petitions. To account for potential invalid signatures, candidates are encouraged to collect at least 55 signatures to ensure they meet the minimum requirement. For a signature to be valid, an active attorney can only sign one candidate’s nominating petition. Candidates cannot sign their own nominating petition, but they can be the petition circulator.

As a substitute for physical signatures, an “electronic confirmation of nomination” may be submitted in the following format:

I support the nomination of [CANDIDATE ATTORNEY’S NAME] to serve on the Judicial Tenure Commission.
[NOMINATING ATTORNEY’S NAME]
[NOMINATING ATTORNEY’S P NUMBER]
[NOMINATING ATTORNEY’S ADDRESS]

“Electronic confirmation of nomination” signatures must be compiled by the candidate and sent in one file along with the signed petition. Candidates should submit a biography of 200 words or fewer along with their nominating petitions.

Online voting for the special election will begin by July 1, 2025, and end on July 15, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Ballots will be emailed to active Michigan attorneys at the email address they have on file with the SBM. Confirm your contact information at michbar.org/MemberArea.
