Commissioners sign national pledge to preserve independence of legal profession
The State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners has signed a nationwide pledge reaffirming its commitment to upholding the Rule of Law and the Constitution.
Developed by the National Conference of Bar Presidents, the “Pledge to Preserve the Independence of the Legal Profession and the Judicial System” reaffirms the core values and foundational principles of the legal profession.
President Lisa J. Hamameh noted that the NCBP pledge is based on the oath all attorneys take prior to entering the profession and the rules of professional conduct, which guide their actions in office.
“Attorneys have always been and must continue to be the first line of defense for the Rule of Law. This pledge focuses on upholding the cornerstones of our American democracy — preserving our inalienable rights, the independence of the judiciary, and access to justice for all — which should never be controversial,” Hamameh said.
Commissioners voted unanimously at their March 6, 2026, meeting to sign the pledge. The Board of Commissioners joins 11 other bar associations or governing entities to sign onto the pledge as well as more than 180 individuals.
The pledge states in part: “In unity and shared purpose, we pledge to be steadfast guardians of justice. We will act, individually and collectively to defend the independence of the judiciary, to uphold the rule of law, and to ensure that the legal profession remains an independent force for truth, justice, and freedom.”
The Pledge also includes seven shared principles:
- Upholding the Rule of Law and the Constitution
- Preserving the Independence of the Profession and the Judiciary
- Upholding the Legal Process and Respect for the Courts
- Promoting Public Trust and Confidence
- Ensuring Access to Justice for All
- Advancing Professional Excellence and Ethical Leadership
- Fostering Unity and Interdependence
The National Council of Bar Presidents is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit corporation founded in 1950. Its mission is to empower, connect, and inspire bar leaders and organizations by providing information and training opportunities.
