In celebration of Law Day, the officers of the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners issued the following statement:

As part of our celebration of Law Day on May 1, 2026, the officers of the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners recognize and celebrate the enduring importance of the rule of law as the foundation of our constitutional system.

This year carries special significance as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence — a defining moment in the nation’s commitment to governance grounded in law and the fair administration of justice.

From the founding era to the present, the rule of law has served as a guiding principle for our legal system — ensuring that laws are applied fairly, rights are protected, and disputes are resolved through established legal processes. The framework established at the nation’s founding, and carried forward through the Constitution and the courts, reflects a commitment to stability, accountability, and equal justice under law.

Central to the rule of law is a strong and independent judiciary. Courts must be able to interpret and apply the law impartially, based on the facts and governing legal principles, free from improper influence. Public confidence in the legal system depends on the integrity and independence of the judicial process.

Equally essential is the role of lawyers in advancing the rule of law. Lawyers must represent clients faithfully and competently, including in difficult matters and on behalf of clients whose causes may be unpopular, ensuring that courts are presented with full and fair arguments.

In Michigan, these responsibilities are reflected in our Lawyer’s Oath. The oath underscores the connection between the daily work of Michigan lawyers and the broader principles that sustain the rule of law. On Law Day 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to the oath and principles that guide our work on behalf of the public.
