Tax law training and pro bono opportunity scheduled for November 13

Attorneys interested in volunteering for the State Bar of Michigan Tax Pro Bono Program are invited to attend a free training clinic to prepare them to help Michigan residents who cannot afford representation. Offered in partnership with SBM’s Taxation Section and Michigan Low-Income Taxpayer Clinics, the training is set for 9 a.m.-noon on Friday, November 13, 2026, at Bodman at Ford Field, located at 1901 St. Antoine Street, 6th Floor, in Detroit.

Training is available to both new attorneys and experienced attorneys. In-person attendance is recommended, but a virtual option is also being offered. Advance registration is required by November 11.

Attorneys who participate in SBM’s Tax Pro Bono Program are connected to clients through legal aid partnerships across Michigan. Participating attorneys receive mentoring from law school tax professors, training materials, an online resource library, and ongoing support. Attorneys also retain the right to decline any individual referral.

In exchange for attending this free training, participants commit to accepting one pro bono tax case within one year.

Participants will learn from experienced tax advocates:

  • Nicole Appleberry, Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Tax and Estate Planning Clinic, University of Michigan Law School
  • Thomas H. Toft, Tax Attorney, West Michigan Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, Legal Aid of Western Michigan
  • Christina Wease, Assistant Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Alvin L. Storrs Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, Michigan State University College of Law

The training will cover common federal and Michigan tax issues and offer practical case strategies.
