The Champion of Justice Award is an award presented periodically by the State Bar of Michigan to no more than five practicing lawyers and judges annually. This award honors individuals who have demonstrated integrity, professional excellence, and extraordinary contributions to the law and society. Nominees will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Must be a current practicing lawyer or judge.
• Must be a member of the State Bar of Michigan at the time of nomination.
• Demonstrates unwavering integrity and adherence to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession.
• Consistently upholds the ethical standards of the law and contributes to the honor and dignity of the profession and should have no publications or past statements to the contrary.
• Exhibits outstanding legal knowledge, skill, and ability in their area(s) of practice or judicial service.
• Recognized by peers as a leader or innovator in the legal field.
• Has achieved an exceptional professional accomplishment that has resulted in a meaningful benefit to one or more of the following:
  • The nation
  • The State of Michigan
  • Or the local community in which the lawyer or judge resides or serves
• The accomplishment should reflect leadership, impact, and distinction beyond the nominee’s normal professional responsibilities.

The Champion of Justice Award is conferred on no more than five individuals in any calendar year. Nominees may include individuals from any area of legal practice or judicial service.

• The award is intended to reflect both career-long excellence and noteworthy specific achievements.
