The John W. Reed Michigan Lawyer Legacy Award is an award presented periodically that honors the profound impact of legal educators whose teaching, mentorship, and scholarship have elevated the quality of legal practice in the State of Michigan.

Named in honor of Professor John W. Reed, a preeminent legal scholar and teacher whose distinguished career included serving as Dean of both the University of Colorado Law School and Wayne State University Law School, this award celebrates those who embody his legacy of excellence in legal education and character. Nominees will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• The nominee must be a current or former educator at a Michigan law school.
• Includes faculty, administrators, or others whose primary professional role involves legal education.
• The award may be given periodically, rather than annually, based on the selection of a deserving recipient.

Nominees will be evaluated based on the following:

• Demonstrated excellence as a teacher, mentor, and role model to Michigan law students.
• A record of inspiring and shaping future lawyers through rigorous, ethical, and compassionate legal instruction.
• Clear and measurable influence on the quality, integrity, and professionalism of legal practice in Michigan through their students and scholarship.
• Recognition as a thought leader or scholar whose work has enriched Michigan’s legal community and advanced understanding of the law.
• Embodies the values of civility, humility, and professionalism for which Professor Reed was widely respected.
• Demonstrates commitment to the highest ideals of the legal profession and should have no publications or past statements to the contrary.

Selection consideration will be given to

• Impact may be demonstrated through:
  • Career achievements
  • Testimonials from former students or legal professionals
  • Published works or leadership in legal education
• The award is reserved for individuals whose career-long contributions merit distinction and reflect the spirit and legacy of John W. Reed.
