In response to President Grieco’s MBJ article, Nate Knapper, Michigan attorney, founder & CEO of The Joseph Project, reached out to President Grieco to share his idea of recruiting a few “legal first responders” to help survivors of human trafficking.  With training, a network of legal first responders could help human trafficking survivors leverage the law and address the legal consequences of their exploitation, something most survivors lack the means to do.

After hearing Mr. Knapper’s idea, President Grieco got to work and assembled a team of dedicated volunteers and subject matter experts.  After only a few short months, beginning with an MBJ article and an idea to leverage pro bono attorneys to help survivors of human trafficking, the Legal First Responders: Equipping Attorneys to Empower Human Trafficking Survivors training is a reality.  The State Bar of Michigan, The Joseph Project, Lakeshore Legal Aid, D. Augustus Straker Bar Association, and the Oakland County Bar Association are proud to be able to offer this human trafficking training on Thursday, October 17, 2019, from 8:00 a.m.–noon.
