NEW! ASSISTANT CLERK—The Michigan Supreme Court is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Clerk in the Clerk’s Office. The position reports to the Clerk of the Court and assists in reviewing pleadings for compliance with court rules, docketing pleadings in new and existing cases, and preparing explanatory letters to accompany rejected or defective materials. Respond to inquiries from the public, attorneys, court staff, and Justices. Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following: Review filings for jurisdiction and compliance with court rules; Docket case initiations and pleadings or correspondence in existing cases, ensure that docket numbers are properly assigned and that other data is properly recorded, and identify priority cases and those cases to be assigned together; Prepare and docket case captions in civil cases; Prepare and docket correspondence regarding the reasons for rejecting pleadings, defects that must be remedied, and the taxation of costs in response to the filing of bills of taxable costs; Respond to inquiries from the public, attorneys, court staff, and Justices regarding Court practices and procedures, filing requirements, and status of cases and administrative orders; Provide guidance and assistance to Clerk’s Office staff in responding to new issues and resolving problems; Prepare certificates of good standing and process admission and disciplinary orders; Perform time-sensitive duties of the Deputy Clerk in his or her absence; Assist the Reporter’s Office, as needed, in editing opinions for publication; Assist in supervising the Court librarian and serve in the primary role of processing invoices and overseeing the library’s budget, collections, and online research usage. EDUCATION: Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. EXPERIENCE & ABILITY: Three to five years practicing appellate law or working in an appellate court.
